Process Modelling Of Bimodal Hdpe Slurry Plant
Chemie
Department SABIC’s Technology and Innovation (T&I) network consists of more than 1500 employees across 6 research- and 10 application centers around the world. The T&I organization supports SABIC’s global businesses in realizing its objectives by providing Best-In-Class Technology solutions. In Europe, the SABIC Technology Center (STC) is based in Geleen (The Netherlands). The primary activity of STC Geleen is to define and to work out research projects aimed at the optimization of existing petrochemical and polymer processes and development of new ones. Our Technology Development department has an opening (internship) for a process development engineer. The Challenge Bimodal HDPE (High Density polyethylene) is used to produce pipes for applications where resistance at high pressure is required. One of the ways to produce such polymers is with a slurry technology in which the polymerization reaction occurs in a diluent (hexane) with Ziegler-Natta catalyst. Via process modelling, a mass and heat balance of the whole production plant can be performed, allowing the optimization of the operating conditions of the different sections of the plant itself. In your study, you will optimize an already existing Aspen Plus model of the real production plant located in Gelsenkirchen. You will validate the results of the simulation against real plant data and implement calculator blocks to make the model adaptable to different production rates. This will allow you to get an overview of the whole plant and appreciate the effect of any local change in operating conditions. If time allows it, the introduction of a detailed kinetic model will also be part of your task. If you are interested in a graduation project we can easily expand this assignment by a study on the fundamentals of reaction and mixing kinetics. We can offer this assignment to you as soon as you want, and would appreciate it if you decided to join SABIC as internship student for at least four months, preferably six months. Your Profile You are a student of chemical engineering with a preference for modelling work, preferably in the third or fourth year. You have understood the basics of mass/heat balance and reaction kinetics, and you are interested and skilled in applying these principles to a real commercial size plant. A visit to the plant and interactions with the plant staff will also be part of the experience. We expect that you can work on your own but do not hesitate to interact with your team or other departments whenever it is necessary. The company language is English. The location of work will be Geleen, The Netherlands. Further Information Please contact Christoph Dittrich (intership coordinator T&I/TD, 0031 46 722 3117) or Malissa Martens (internship coordinator HRM, 0031 46 722 2285) if you have further questions. Internship T&i Chemistry And Catalysis
Chemie
The Challenge Investigation towards new catalysts for polyolefin preparation. In the research group “Advanced Catalysis” of the department Technology And Innovation of SABIC Europe in Geleen, we are continuously looking for enthousiastic HBO trainees with affinity for the challenging interplay of groundbreaking chemistry and its possible application in current or future processes of SABIC. The “Advanced Catalysis Group” monitors the new developments in the area of catalysts for the polyethylene and polypropylene preparation. Besides this, we are also exploring the fundamental processes that take place when using these catalysts. The organic-preparative trainee period will involve the synthesis and testing of new catalysts for the polyethylene and polypropylene preparation. These catalysts consist of a metal centre which can contain a diversity of ligands. The synthesis often involves the interesting combination of inorganic, organic and organometallic synthesis. The prepared catalysts have to be characterized using a multitude of analytical techniques, which in general is performed at the analytical departments of our analytical partners at DSM-Resolve. Testing of the catalysts is performed in collaboration with the SABIC technicians who actually run the high-pressure polymerisation equipment. Whenever possible, we use computational modeling for studying the relation between catalyst structure and its performance in the polymerisation of ethylene and propylene. Additionally, the polymers have to be characterized by GPC, IR and NMR, which again will be performed at the analytical labs of DSM-Resolve. Further Information As you can see, this is a challenging internship, which involves a training in a very broad area, covering (in)organic synthesis, computational modeling, catalyst kinetics and polymer chemistry. The period of the internship is at least 4 months, starting second part of 2011. For further information, please contact: Nic. Friederichs, Project coördinator ‘Advanced Catalysis’ Technology and Innovation +31 46 7223118 or Malissa Martens, Internship Coordinator +31 46 7222285 or malissa.martens@SABIC-europe.com Sharing our futures in leadership SABIC is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of chemicals, fertilizers, plastics and metals. Internship R&d Catalyst Development
Chemie
Department The chemistry & catalysis department is one of three departments (besides our sister departments technology development and material development) located at SABIC Technical center in Geleen (NL). We develop new catalyst systems and support our global production assets in selecting the right catalyst systems and in making the desired products with the right quality and at lowest costs. We participate in troubleshooting activities in the plants and collaboration programs internally and externally. We work in multi-disciplinary teams and support the implementation of new recipes or new catalysts developed by our sister departments. The department is well equipped with the state-of-the-art experimental tools varying from polymerization reactors to small scale extrusion and injection moulding equipment. The Challenge We use several lab-scale (a few litres) reactors for polymerising ethylene, propylene and higher comonomers. Polymerisation catalysts are tested in these reactors, but also new polymer compositions are synthesised in the course of new materials development. The laboratory reactors are highly automated such that accurately defined conditions can be applied to the polymerisation experiments. The catalysts used for polymerization are either proprietary catalysts or commercially available ones. The type of catalysts often determines the properties of the polymeric end products. And development of new catalyst systems helps us to bring polymers with differentiating properties in the market. You will participate in developing a new catalyst system for propylene polymerization. The heterogeneous catalysts to be developed are based on Ziegler/Natta catalyst type. Your assignment will include: review the current knowledge and/or methodological approaches on the said topic, based on the review propose approaches to achieve the desired catalyst system, synthesize and test the catalysts in the experimental polymerization reactors to validate the proposed approaches, test the material properties of the obtained polymers propose a path forward with regard to further research and/or commercialization. You will be supervised and supported by researchers with a profound background in catalyst synthesis, polymerization reactions and material evaluation. Your Profile You are a student of chemistry (academic), preferably in the third, fourth or fifth year. You are strong in conceptual thinking and it is essential that you have a sound understanding and hands-on experience of organo-metallic catalyst preparation. We expect that you can work on your own but do not hesitate to interact with your team or other departments whenever it is necessary. The company language is English.
